Moving to Palm Beach: A Local Mover's Guide to the Island

Palm Beach is a small barrier island town with a big reputation. It is home to oceanfront estates, quiet residential streets lined with hedges, Worth Avenue's shops and a set of well-kept condo buildings, many of them occupied only part of the year.

Moving here is less about distance and more about care. The furniture tends to be valuable, the buildings and associations tend to have firm expectations, and every truck reaches the island the same way: over a bridge. This guide covers what to plan for, starting with a mix-up we hear about all the time.

Palm Beach vs West Palm Beach: not the same place

This trips up new residents, out-of-state relatives and even delivery drivers. The Town of Palm Beach is its own municipality on the barrier island, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Lake Worth Lagoon. West Palm Beach is a separate, much larger city on the mainland across the lagoon, with its own downtown, government and neighborhoods.

To add to the confusion, "Palm Beach" is also the name of the county, and nearby towns such as Palm Beach Gardens, North Palm Beach and Palm Beach Shores are separate places again. When you give an address to a mover, utility or HOA, use the full town name and ZIP code. If you are actually headed to the mainland, our West Palm Beach movers page is the better place to start.

The bridges decide your route

Three bridges connect the island to West Palm Beach: the Flagler Memorial Bridge on the north end, the Royal Park Bridge near the middle of town and the Southern Boulevard Bridge to the south. Which one your crew uses depends on where your home sits on the island and where the truck is coming from.

These are drawbridges over the Intracoastal, so openings for boats can add a short wait. Traffic across them also builds during the busy winter months. When you plan the day, think about which bridge is closest to your new address and leave room in the schedule for a delay or two.

Housing on the island

Estates and single-family homes

Large homes sit along South Ocean Boulevard, the North End and the streets between the lake and the ocean. Many have long driveways, gates, formal entries and landscaping that a crew needs to work around carefully. Some older homes have narrow doorways, curved stairs or floors that call for extra floor and door-frame protection.

Condos and co-ops

The condo buildings in Palm Beach range from mid-century low-rise buildings to oceanfront towers. Expect a building manager to set the move window, reserve the elevator and ask for a Certificate of Insurance. Some buildings limit moves during the high season. Our condo moving guide has a building checklist that applies here too.

Expect firm rules, and ask before you assume

Palm Beach has a reputation for tidy streets and careful oversight of what happens in front of a home. Rather than guess what applies to your address, ask directly:

  • Ask your building or association about allowed move days and hours, and whether moves are limited during certain months.
  • Ask the town or your property manager whether a large truck may park on your street, and for how long.
  • Ask whether there are rules about leaving boxes, packing debris or furniture at the curb, and plan to haul materials away the same day.
  • If you are renovating before moving in, check with the town about contractor and work-hour rules so your movers are not scheduled into a conflict.

A short call a few weeks ahead usually answers all of this, and it keeps move day calm for you and your neighbors.

Seasonal residents and two-home moves

A large share of Palm Beach residents split the year between the island and somewhere else. That creates its own kind of move: opening a home in the fall, closing it in spring, or shifting part of a household between two properties. These moves often involve a smaller set of furniture, plus art, clothing and personal items that travel back and forth.

If that sounds like you, keep a running inventory of what lives at each home, and pack the items that travel in clearly marked cartons. Seasonal timing also matters. Late fall and early spring are busy windows on the island, so book ahead. For a full look at seasonal tradeoffs, including hurricane season from June 1 to November 30, see our best time to move guide.

Fine art, antiques and heirlooms

This is where a Palm Beach move earns its planning. Paintings, sculpture, antique case pieces, chandeliers, mirrors and stone tabletops are common, and each needs its own handling.

  1. Make an inventory with photos. Note the condition of each valuable piece before anyone touches it.
  2. Separate the high-value items. Keep them off the general packing list so they get individual wrapping and a dedicated spot on the truck.
  3. Talk about your coverage. Check your homeowner's or collector's policy for moving coverage, and ask your mover what protection options are available.
  4. Plan the placement. Decide where large art and heavy antiques go in the new home before move day, so they are handled once.

Hercules Local Movers moves fine art, antiques, pianos and safes as part of our specialty work. Our specialty movers page explains how we approach those items.

How to Find the Best, Most Affordable Movers in Palm Beach

The best mover for your Palm Beach move is the one that is properly registered, prices your job in writing, and does not charge you for space or weight you are not using. Before you book anyone, check these:

  • State registration. Florida movers register with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Ask for the number and look it up. Ours is IM150012.
  • A written estimate before move day. You should know the crew, the expected time and what is included before anyone loads a box.
  • No weight or size minimums. On a smaller move, minimums are where a "cheap" quote stops being cheap.
  • Recent reviews. Read what customers wrote on Google and Thumbtack in the last few months, not just the star rating.

For an affordable local move, Hercules Local Movers estimates start at $299 for a 2-hour job under 50 miles, with no weight or size minimums. A service charge applies to all moves and is confirmed in your written estimate, and the final bill follows the actual time. See small move prices for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Palm Beach the same as West Palm Beach?

No. The Town of Palm Beach is a separate municipality on the barrier island, while West Palm Beach is a larger city on the mainland across the Lake Worth Lagoon. Always use the full town name and ZIP code for your move.

Which bridge will the moving truck use to reach Palm Beach?

From West Palm Beach, the island is reached by the Flagler Memorial, Royal Park and Southern Boulevard bridges. Addresses on the south end of the island are often closer to the bridges from Lake Worth Beach or Lantana. The crew will usually take the one closest to your address, allowing for drawbridge openings and traffic.

Are there restrictions on moving in Palm Beach during the winter season?

Some condo buildings and associations limit move days or hours during busy months. Ask your building manager or association before you set a date.

Can you move fine art and antiques to a Palm Beach home?

Yes. Hercules Local Movers handles fine art, antiques, pianos and safes, and we plan the wrapping and placement for each piece ahead of time.

Do I need a Certificate of Insurance for a Palm Beach condo move?

Many buildings ask for one before they will reserve the elevator. Send us the building's requirements and we will coordinate the COI with management.
