Small Moves & Single Items: You Shouldn't Pay for a Full Truck You Don't Need
Not every move is a whole house. A studio, a few rooms, a single couch, a refrigerator, or a piano still has to get from one address to another. National carriers make these jobs awkward because their model assumes a full truck and a minimum charge. If you only have a bedroom's worth of furniture, you still pay as if the trailer were packed. That is exactly the niche a local crew can fill, and it is the work Hercules Local Movers is built for. See our small movers page for prices and what we move.
This guide explains why minimums punish small jobs, what counts as a small move in South Florida, and how a written quote without weight or size floors keeps the price tied to the work you actually need. No dollar figures here. The accurate number is the one built around your items, your stairs, and your two addresses.
The problem with weight and size minimums
A minimum is a floor the company will not go below, even when your inventory is tiny. Weight minimums bill you as if a studio weighed the same as a three-bedroom. Size minimums bill you for cubic feet you never used. On a local South Florida job, that is how a couch-and-boxes move quietly becomes "the cost of a truck for the day."
The sales pitch is efficiency: they have to send a vehicle anyway, so you share that cost. The result on the ground is the opposite. You wait for a crew whose schedule is built around bigger jobs, and you pay for capacity that never touched your belongings. If you have ever been told a single-item move "isn't worth the dispatch," that is the minimum talking, not the difficulty of the work.
A fair small-move price starts from the opposite rule. Send the crew the job needs. Charge for that crew and that time. Put it in writing before anyone loads a dolly.
What counts as a "small move"
There is no official industry definition, so here is a practical one for Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County:
- Studio and one-bedroom apartments, including high-rises, as long as the inventory is a household, not a warehouse.
- Partial moves: one floor of a townhome, a home office, a child's room after a split household, or the contents of a storage unit.
- Single items: a sofa, a mattress set, a washer and dryer, a safe, a treadmill, or a dining table that will not fit in a friend's SUV.
- Storage runs: apartment to storage, storage to a new rental, or a few pieces out of a unit so the rest can stay.
- Marketplace pickups: a furniture find in Doral that needs to land in a Fort Lauderdale condo the same afternoon.
If you can list the pieces on one page, it is a small move. If you are emptying a four-bedroom with a garage, it is not, and you should use a full residential moving quote instead. The line is honesty about volume, not a marketing category.
How we price small moves fairly
Hercules does not use a weight minimum or a size minimum. You pay for the move you have. The written estimate covers the truck, fuel, blankets, wrap, and basic disassembly and reassembly. If the job is a single sofa up a walk-up, that is the job. If it is a studio with a freight elevator already reserved, that is the job. Nothing in the quote is there to make a small load look like a big one.
Access still matters. A piano on a third-floor walk-up is a small inventory and a hard carry. A mattress in a building with a reserved freight lift is easier. Those details belong in the estimate, not as add-ons after the item is in the hallway. That is the same no-hidden-fees rule we use on house moves, applied to the jobs national carriers treat as leftovers.

Common small moves we do
Apartment moves. Studios and one-bedrooms in Brickell, South Beach, Las Olas, and downtown West Palm are most of this work. Building rules still apply. A small inventory does not skip the COI or the elevator window. It just means you should not be billed as if you were emptying a house in Kendall.
Single-item jobs. Couches, appliances, and safes are routine. The constraint is usually the path (stairs, turns, a tight elevator), not the number of boxes. Tell us the item, the floors, and whether there is a freight lift.
Piano and other specialty pieces. A piano is a small move in count and a specialized move in skill. It belongs on our specialty movers page: trained handling, the right straps and board, and a crew that has done the staircase before. Antiques and oversized art follow the same pattern. They are not "extra boxes." They are a different kind of job, quoted that way.
Store and marketplace pickups. If you bought a piece that the seller will not deliver, a local crew can collect it and place it in the room. This is often faster than renting a van you still cannot load safely.
For apartment and condo work in Miami-Dade specifically, the Miami movers page covers beach access, Brickell docks, and suburban homes without repeating the small-move math here.
